Sirmione Serenade: Finding Love in Italy's Final Gem After Leaving My Heart in Sicily

Journey's End on Lake Garda - Reveling in the Last, Most Beautiful City of Italy's Grand Tour

After wandering through the city of love, Verona, soaking in the stunning views from Selvino's mountain peak, experiencing the enchantment of the floating city, Venice, and leaving a piece of my heart in Trapani, Sicily, our journey concludes in the charming town of Sirmione. Welcome back to "Pennywise and Passport Foolish: Navigating the Globe on a Shoestring" this fine Friday.

Is Sirmione worth a visit? Without a doubt yes! However, if you plan a summer visit, brace yourself for hordes of tourists. Here's a little secret: visit in early October, and you'll find a quieter Sirmione with lower prices for accommodations, food, and everything in between. Since our goal is to experience luxury on a budget, October is the golden month.

Walking is the way to explore this gem, and if you're not a fan, most hotels offer bicycles for daily rent. Sirmione exudes a welcoming vibe with the picturesque Lake Garda and the most charming villages Italy has to offer. Opt for a four-hour boat tour starting at 500 euros—it's a splurge, but here's a tip: share the cost with fellow travelers to make it more budget-friendly.

For a shorter, wallet-friendly option, take a 30-minute tour of Lake Garda for around 20 euros. Learn not just history but also about the lake's thermal waters, rich in minerals like sulfur and sodium, gushing up from its depths at a toasty 70°C.

Explore the historical landmark, Grotte di Catullo, surrounded by olive trees and offering a breathtaking view. Entrance fee: 9 euros. Sirmione unfolds its medieval charm with thermal spas, beaches, and a town embraced by gardens. Perfect for lovers or those seeking a soulful connection.

Don't miss a visit to Jamaica Beach for a unique rocky shoreline experience. The ScaligeroCastle is a must-see, preserving its medieval charm. Climb to the top of the tower and fort walls for the best views.

While strolling, the Flower House with a small cafΓ© blanketed in purple bougainvillea will melt your heart. And like many places in Italy, there's Santa Maria Della Neve, a 15th-century church to explore.

My trusty notes and paper from the tough guide turned my spending into an educational endeavor (or so I tell myself). A day trip from Verona or Milan is ideal, but if you choose to stay in Sirmione, two days should suffice to explore the lake, castle, and indulge in gelato from the many shops within the Scaliger Castle.

Speaking of food, while Sirmione isn't the cheapest, booking in advance can land you deals. I stayed at Hotel Porto Azzurro, a three-star hotel with a seven-star breakfast. Pro tip: hotels that offer breakfast save you money on morning meals, leaving room to indulge in a lavish dinner.

Yes, the dinners can be pricey I once spent 50 euros on a plate of pasta and seafood. It was delicious, but not necessarily out-of-this-world good. Overall, the experience in Sirmione is one you won't regret.

And let's talk about gelato! The Scaliger Castle boasts an array of gelato shops with massive scoops. I battled through two flavors, and let me tell you, it was a war worth fighting.

Italy was truly worth every penny and moment invested. I reveled in the warmth of its people and immersed myself in the rich tapestry of its history, particularly falling head over heels for its cuisine. While every city I explored held its own charm, Trapani undeniably captured my heart. Sicily, you've left an indelible mark on me. From wandering the streets of love in Verona to marveling at the breathtaking vistas from Selvino's mountain peaks, and being enchanted by the floating marvel of Venice, each experience was unforgettable.

Thank you for journeying with me through Italy. Next week, in "Pennywise and Passport Foolish: Navigating the Globe on a Shoestring," I'll be taking you to my homeland, Tanzania, where Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, and the Serengeti await. I'm eager to welcome you to my home.

Hike, Breathe, connect: Selvino's Panorama Unveiled, a Thousand Meters Above Sea Level

From Bergamo Land, with love! Embracing Selvino on a Shoestring Budget. Welcome back, dear readers, to another chapter of our global escapades, where we spin tales of discovery on a shoestring budget. Today, we unfurl the tapestry of Selvino, a ski resort city perched on a mountain that showers love year-round.

Most pilgrims flock to this town for its winter wonder, but here's the clandestine truth Selvino is a year-round gem. Whether you're captivated by snowflakes or enticed by hiking trails, this place is the perfect embrace.

Embarking on a scenic 30-minute ride from Bergamo, the winding road to Selvino is like a snake slithering up the mountainside. Your rearview mirror becomes a canvas, capturing the tail end of this serpentine journey.

Upon reaching the summit, prepare to be breathless not just from the elevation of a thousand meters, but from the awe-inspiring panorama that unfolds. Selvino is conveniently close to Milan, making it an ideal day trip for city dwellers seeking a taste of mountain magic.

Now, let's delve into the practical budget talk. For less than $100, you can traverse from Milan to Bergamo, be it by train or private transport. Opting for fall, not just for the foliage but for a pocket-friendly escapade, allows you to relish summer views with fewer tourists and a teaser of winter's charm

Yes, an African woman ventured to hike in Italy. No laughter, please; Google's images lured me, and the mountains' call was irresistible. If you share the spirit of a hiker, Selvino opens its arms wide. Begin with the Giro Del Monte Padona, a trail circumnavigating the entire mountain.

For a shorter escapade, Monte Purito, a few minutes' walk from the city, gifts stunning views and crisp mountain air. History aficionados can explore the Santuario Del Perello trail, leading to an ancient church that once embraced pilgrims globally. It's not just about fresh air; it's an opportunity to connect with your soul.

Diving into history, visit Sciesopoli  Casa dei Bambini di Selvino, a museum dedicated to Jewish children orphaned during the Holocaust. Selvino unfolds as more than just a haven for outdoor enthusiasts; it harbors rich stories waiting to be discovered.

Navigating this amicable city, where English finds limited usage, becomes a breeze with Google Translate as your ally. If hiking doesn't resonate with you, don't overlook Selvino; its hotels are a splendid choice.

I opted for the HarmonySuite Hotel a 4-star haven at a 5-star-worthy price of $50 a day, booked well in advance. Imagine yourself by the window, savoring mountain views, an experience to soothe the soul.

Now, let's savor the flavors Italian simplicity at its zenith. Polenta, akin to grits, became my daily indulgence. And, of course, pizza  a daily ritual. A cheesy slice with anchovies and red pepper flakes – a symphony for the taste buds.

Oh, and the gelato from Yogorino! Indulge in a couple of scoops; your taste buds will thank you.

Selvino extends its charm beyond adults; it's remarkably child-friendly. From slopes to special trails, the Harmony Suite Hotel even boasts a water splash area for summer delights.

And don't overlook the festivals! In winter, it transforms into a chocolate haven – the reigning queen of Selvino. Everything turns into a sweet celebration.

"I' have learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you make them feel " Maya Angelou

He was nice and kind to me, thanks friend

In conclusion, whether you're a seasoned hiker, a history buff, a culinary connoisseur, or a family with kids, Selvino unfolds its arms wide, proving that a low-budget journey can rival a millionaire's retreat. From Bergamo Land, with love, Selvino beckons a hidden gem awaiting your discovery.

Next week, we bid farewell to the mountainous embrace of Selvino and set our sights on the enchanting lakeside haven of Sirmione. Join us for the final chapter of our Italian escapade, where serene lake views and cultural wonders await. Until then, adventur e awaits on the next page

Exploring Verona: A Love Affair on a Shoestring Budget

Discover the Heartbeat of Verona with Pennywise and Passport Foolish

From Verona, with love! Welcome back, dear readers, to our global escapades where we weave tales of discovery on a shoestring budget. Today, our compass points us to the city of love, the sanctuary for solo adventurers Verona, Italy. Whether entwined in a passionate romance or captivated by the allure of one's own soul, Verona unfolds as the perfect canvas for showcasing love.

Love in the Air: A Tale of Juliet and Romeo

Verona had nestled itself in the chambers of my heart long before my arrival, a sentiment kindled by the timeless tale of Juliet and Romeo. The desire to caress the statue of the exquisite Juliet, to stand where magic once unfolded, drew me irresistibly. Verona did not disappoint; love was indeed in the air.

Embraced by Richness and Laid-Back Atmosphere

The city embraced me with its opulence and laid-back aura. Witnessing locals savoring life, indulging in wine at 10 am, set the perfect backdrop for my cup of hot coffee. Arriving from Roma by train, I took a taxi to my sanctuary in Verona the Euromotel Croce Bianca, a 2-star gem that became my home away from home.

Verona's Underrated Charm: A Glass of Wine at 10 am. Given the choice between Milan, Roma, or Verona, the latter became my hands-down favorite. The calmness and richness of Verona outshone the crowded Colosseum of Roma. Verona's underrated Colosseum, coupled with the imagery of enjoying a glass o wine at 10 am, created a serene yet vibrant atmosphere.

Memorable Attractions: Unveiling the Beauty of Verona

Memorable attractions etched themselves into my heart: Arena Di Verona, the ancient stadium preceding the Colosseum, Piazza delle Erbe, Piazzale Castel San Pietro, Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore, and various religious sites. Verona's beauty unfolded as I immersed myself in these enchanting spaces.

Wine, Coffee, and Friendly Encounters: Bacco's Welcome

A simple cup of coffee with a journalist friend from Verona became a blissful experience. Strolling through a farmer's market behind the soccer stadium, reminiscent of African markets, and encounters with friendly locals. For wine enthusiasts, Bacco offered the best of Verona's Amarone Wine, accompanied by a warm welcome and a selection of wine and cheese a check off my Kenyan solo travel bucket list.

Verona's Walkable Charm: A Map and a 1.50 Euro AdventureVerona's walkable terrain made it ideal for exploration. A river crossing the city, lined with shops and restaurants near the Colosseum, added to the city's charm. Verona offers walking tours, but a budget-friendly alternative is obtaining a city map and a 1.50 euro two-hour bus ticket
.Proximity to Venezia and Sirmione: A Pocket-Friendly Hub Proximity to Venezia and Sirmione La Grande made Verona a pocket-friendly hub. Opting for day tours to these tourist hotspots while basing yourself in Verona proved cost-effective. My day trip to Venezia was filled with exploration, but starting January, visitors would have to pay to explore this unique city.

Affordable Adventures: Venezia by Boat and Sirmione's Grand Lake

Venezia became more affordable when shared with a friend or a newfound companion. An 80-euro boat ride for both of us made the experience more budget-friendly. Staying in Verona and day-tripping to Sirmione Grand Lake for two days may have cost me a few euros, but it allowed me to savor the bicycle-friendly city  an experience worthy of every penny.

Verona's Culinary Charm: A Recipe for the Heart

Before venturing into any city, crafting a bucket list of sights and flavors becomes a roadmap to elevate your journey. As we anticipate concluding our Italy tour next week in Sirmione and Bergamo  the towns with open arms for tourists,.

Pasta Carbonara remains my Verona-induced culinary delight. This dish, forever echoing the simplicity that is the key ingredient for Italian cuisine, is my gift from Verona's heart to your kitchen. Remember, simplicity is the portal to the heart of Italian food.

Ingredients:

- 400g (14 oz) Your favorite pasta

- 150g (5 oz) pancetta or guanciale, diced or anchovy

- 3 large eggs

- 1 cup (about 100g) grated Pecorino Romano cheese

- 1 cup (about 100g) grated Parmesan cheese

- 3 cloves garlic, minced (optional)

- Salt and black pepper, to taste

- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:**

1. Cook the Pasta:

   - Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

   - Cook the pasta according to the package instructions until al dente.

   - Reserve about 1 cup of pasta cooking water before draining.

2. Prepare the Sauce:

   - In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, Pecorino Romano cheese, and Parmesan cheese until well combined. Set it aside.

3. Cook the Pancetta:(anchovy my choice since I don’t eat pork)

   - In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the diced pancetta (or anchovy) until it becomes crispy and golden brown. If using garlic, add it to the skillet and sautΓ© until fragrant.

4. Combine Pasta and Sauce:

   - Add the cooked pasta to the skillet with the pancetta, tossing to coat the pasta in the rendered fat.

   - Remove the skillet from heat, allowing it to cool slightly to avoid curdling the eggs.

5. Add Egg Mixture:

Pour the egg and cheese mixture over the pasta, tossing quickly and continuously to create a creamy sauce. The heat from the pasta will cook the eggs, creating a velvety texture.

6. **Adjust Consistency:

   - If the sauce seems too thick, gradually add the reserved pasta cooking water, a little at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.

7. **Season and Serve:

   - Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.

   - Serve immediately, ensuring the dish is piping hot.

Enjoy your homemade Pasta Carbonara! The combination of the creamy sauce, salty pancetta, or anchovy and perfectly cooked pasta creates a delightful and comforting dish that captures the essence of Italian cuisine.

A Solo Adventure Unveiling Love, Laughter, and Tranquility for the Fearless Woman Traveler - Trapani

From Sicily! Greetings, dear readers! Welcome back to our global escapades with Pennywise and Passport Foolish, where we traverse the world on a shoestring budget. Today, our compass points towards the heart-stealing land of Sicily, and within its embrace, we find ourselves captivated by the enchanting city of Trapani.

Trapani, a city with a soul that possesses the magical ability to mend even the most shattered hearts. Its history is a tapestry woven with the threads of Carthage and the Roman Republic, revealing layers of captivating stories as you ascend the mountain city above. Picture this: a cable taxi ride to Erice, unveiling the secrets of Sicily's past like pages of an ancient love story.

In Trapani, even a table for one becomes a poetic rendezvous. Fear not, for this city will not just embrace you; it will gently let you land, allowing you to inhale deeply and surrender to the intoxicating embrace of Trapani. Whether you are a lover of sandy shores, majestic mountains, or a seeker of historical treasures, Trapani welcomes you with open arms, offering a palette of experiences with a few euros or even for free.

Let go, surrender to the moment, and witness Trapani weaving its magic, making you forget your past. Fall in love with your soul, and if you're wondering whether Trapani is worth a visit, my unequivocal answer is a resounding yes. The atmosphere and lifestyle here embody the true essence of dolce vita – the sweet life. Yes! Trapani, the city that stole my heart!

Here, the must-visit places are as rich as the love of the past itself. Begin with Erice, a town with a mere 154 permanent residents by night, transforming into a bustling hub for thousands of tourists during the day. It's a fairytale medieval town where you can easily lose yourself in the echoes of the Roman Empire and the grandeur of Julius Caesar.

Erice, perched 750 meters above sea level, offers a panoramic view that rivals a scene from a romantic movie. Take a day tour for just 12 euros, exploring almost 60 churches and historical sites in a two-hour journey. The air is filled with the whispers of ancient tales, and the narrow cobblestone streets lead you through a labyrinth of love stories etched in the town's history.

After your exploration, indulge in the traditional pastries, a sensory delight with a predominant note of almonds. Picture yourself sipping espresso in a small cafΓ©, tucked away in a corner where time seems to stand still.

Venture into charming restaurants like Gusto Panino Gourmet, Ristorante Cafe San Rocco, Osteria Di Venere, Gli Arch di San Carlo, and La Prima Dea; each a culinary journey worth savoring. Gusto Panino Gourmet, for instance, not only tantalizes your taste buds with Sicilian delicacies but also creates an ambiance that whispers sweet serenades of the sea.

And then, as the day draws to a close, embrace the unparalleled beauty of Trapani harbor, a canvas painted with the warm hues of the sunset a perfect setting for romance. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky is set ablaze with a fiery passion that mirrors the fervor of your heart in this timeless city.

I am in love with you Trapani

While in Trapani, venture further to the Aegadian Islands, an archipelago off the coast that hosts Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo. A day trip, though it may cost 90 euros, is an investment in memories that will last a lifetime. As your boat glides through the crystalline waters, the islands emerge like jewels on the Mediterranean, each with its own love story waiting to be discovered.

Ever wondered where your salt comes from? Trapani will answer that question, offering not just a historical trip but also a nature reserve teeming with diverse birdlife. A week in Trapani would be delightful, but even a compact 3-4 days will unveil most of its beauty.

For those who love to bring the flavors of their travels into their homes, consider joining Miss Maria's cooking school. A dose of Italian cooking will linger in your kitchen long after you've bid farewell to Trapani. Imagine yourself surrounded by the aromas of Sicilian spices, learning to recreate the dishes that danced on your palate in this charming city.

Most travelers stay in Trapani and visit Erice as a day trip, but my unconventional choice was to stay in Erice and explore Trapani. Hotel Villa San Giovanni offered one of the best window-view rooms, although Hotel Elimo, Hotel Moderno, and Al Postele 17 also caught my eye with their breathtaking charm.

As I reminisce, my taste buds dance with nostalgia, recalling the exquisite flavors of squid stew and Busiate Pesto Trapanese. Allow me to share the recipes with you, a token of the culinary love affair that unfolded in the heart of Trapani.

Instructions:

1. Clean the squid and slice the tubes into rings. Leave small tentacles whole.

2. In a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion, garlic, celery, and carrot. SautΓ© until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.

3. Add the sliced squid to the skillet and cook for about 3-5 minutes until the squid turns opaque.

4. Pour in the white wine to deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Add the crushed tomatoes and fish or vegetable broth. Stir well.

6. Taste the stew and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Serve the squid stew hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley and accompanied by lemon wedges.

This Sicilian squid stew is not just a dish; it's a symphony of flavors that captures the essence of Trapani. Pair it with a glass of local wine, and you'll find yourself immersed in a culinary love story that mirrors the city's charm.

Join me next week as we journey to Verona, the city of love, where every cobblestone street whispers tales of romance. Until then, keep embracing the world with open arms and a passport foolishly ready for more adventures. Ciao!
